Lei Xue was born in Qingdao China and studied Oil painting in Shandong, China, and in 1999 he moved to Germany and studied free arts. He is best known for his porcelain works that combine contemporary and traditional ideas and motifs while exploring the relationship between old and new.

Lei Xue, "Drinking Tea", 2014. Hand-painted porcelain.

In his pottery season "Drinking Tea" he creates porcelain cans in Ming Dynasty aesthetics to explore the motifs of old and new through juxtaposition while also displaying traditional motifs through the patterns on the cans. Through this series, he is trying to emphasize how old traditions should not simply be thrown away but instead be valued and incorporated into everyday life. He paints each piece by hand, so each piece is very close to his heart and further represents those traditional methods of art from his culture and the Ming Dynasty.
