Jon Ching is a self trained artist who currently works in L.A., California. He brings his hometown and cultural background of Kaneohe, Hawaii in his work by forming a lot of his work about the natural world. He uses surrealism to imagine the limitless combinations that nature can produce and the new creatures that are created in his work represent the endless potential of life on Earth. He wants to inspire more care and admiration for the beauty of our planet as well as making people more aware of endangered species and other conditions of humanity that threaten the existence of nature. He creates detailed oil paintings of hybrid animal and nature paintings that have a surreal aspect to portray his message.

I really enjoy Ching's work and the way he so seamlessly blends in surrealist elements. It all seems so natural until you look a little closer at it which is part of what I am trying to do. Part of this comes from the high level of craft he has as it helps everything blend together so well. I love the way he portrays different animals and how his compositions are interesting even though he only focuses usually on one subjects. Despite that simplicity there is so much going on that creates a really interesting piece. I really think his work is beneficial to what I am trying to do with the surrealist aspect of my works that focus on animals. His colors are also done in a way that flows together very well even if they are a bit different at some points like in Wonderland. I really like the themes behind his work as well, and I think they are well portrayed through his work in a unique manner that I would love to work towards.
